DIY Shelves

I had two problems when we first moved into our home (besides my issues with honey oak, ok so 3 issues), but the main two being:

1. I did not own a table saw or miter box, santa seems to KEEP forgetting these items, despite my perfect behavior and top spot on the "nice" list :)
2. My bank account didn't seem to understand how much things I liked cost....

So we lived with bare walls (and continue to in most rooms) until I decided to do some DIY on a budget.

I saw a post on pinterest (go figure) about a shelf I loved. It was from Pottery Barn (go figure) and cost over $300... yes, $300 for a shelf. A few pieces of wood slapped together for more than a car payment. Nope not happening. BUT I know I can build this thing! So, I hop in my car and head to Home Depot, load up my small car with 8' planks and everything I needed. Drove CAREFULLY with my windows down and trunk open with wood spilling out of every open area to my parent's.

"Dad, can I use your tools?" ... and so it began!

I wish I had progress picutres, but I don't because it was about 10 degrees outside when we were working and I couldn't feel my extremities. Thankfully I didn't have a run in with the saw.

Here is the final product!

After it was built, I stained it with a dark stain first, then painted white and sanded to make it look a little rustic! I love the way it turned out!

Loved it so much I decided to make some more (with no molding... me and the miter box were done cutting angles for a bit). These ones were gallery shelves for above our couch. SUPER EASY!

Don't mind the empty picture frames.. Haven't quite found the right pictures yet, and people would judge if they were all of my cats.

Slowly but surely we are making our house a home.
